In 1949 Willis Martin started a wholesale plumbing supply business in Hutchinson, Kansas with two partners. The company went through several iterations over the decades, including expansions, shifts in focus and store closures. Then, in 1970, Willis purchased the supply business from his partners, Howard Bentley and Henry Howe, who were more interested in manufacturing and split off. Western Supply Company became the name of the wholesale supply company, headquartered close to the downtown business sector of Hutchinson.
Willis’ son, Jack Martin, the current president of Western Supply Company (WSC) who is starting to plan his retirement, recalls working at the ground level of sweeping the floors and emptying trash while growing up. Through high school and college, Jack still helped out at his dad’s company. His hours increased to a part-time position when his dad suffered a stroke in 1972.
With a business management degree from Wichita State University earned in 1974, Jack Martin started his own company in Hutchinson, Motor Sports Specialties, in a field that did interest him, automotive accessories.
Then in 1982, Jack and his wife, Lora, who Jack met at Hutchinson High and married after college, both started working at WSC full-time. The decision was a life-changing one for the company and the family.
In 1985 Martin bought the company from his father and sold his own business to Dennis Woolsey, a former employee who then operated it until April 2023.
Jack’s business acumen brought expansion and growth to WSC. In 1985, a larger building/warehouse was acquired on the east side of Hutchinson for better transportation access, larger warehouse space and more receiving and outgoing dock ports. Locations added by merger/buyout—Hays 1989 and Dodge City 1995. Great Bend has been a location since 1952.
Shortly after celebrating WSC’s 70th Anniversary, the Covid pandemic hit. The business navigated supply and demand situations which had never been seen before. Jack and the company’s long-term business contacts, product and supply knowledge and foresight to always look for ways to keep supplies coming in for the tradesmen that were depending on WSC turned out to be the winning formula to survive the test of the last five years of uncertainty the industry and country were going through. Many of those months turned out to end with the highest sales of the company’s history.
Jack’s two sons have worked at WSC since they were children and are now full-time as adults. Doug joined in 1990 and is the director of IT. Scott, who joined in 1997, has recently transitioned from location manager to vice president. Lora Martin, Jack’s wife, recently retired after 40 years as HR director.
A fourth generation, Scott’s sons, Jace and Maddox, are assisting during the summer with inventory and stock pull for orders.
The management team also includes LeAnn Knight, operations director, employed since 1985; and Candace Winkel, credit and marketing manager, employed since 1997. The Kansas company employs 38 people at five central/western Kansas locations.
